Sclera Color Contacts Have a Variety of Uses

Sclera color contacts can be used to correct certain eye cosmetic problems as well as to be used for Halloween and party uses. Commonly known as the white of the eye, the sclera is the protective outer coat. It is opaque and covers a large portion of the visible surface of the eyeball itself. Contacts with a clear opening in the center and white coloring of the sclera portion are often used for those that have permanent discoloration of the sclera.

One problem with the sclera that might need correction with contacts is severe bloodshot eyes. Small blood vessels of the surface become inflamed and enlarged, creating redness in the sclera. Most often the condition is caused by eyestrain, fatigue, or environmental factors. In severe cases, the sclera might permanently be damaged, creating the bloodshot effect everyday and can be distracting to others. A white colored contact can be used to correct this problem, without surgery.

Some patients have other forms of discoloration of the sclera. In some patients, the sclera appears to have a yellowish/brown tint due to excess pigmentation. Some diseases, such as malaria, cause yellowish tones in the sclera. If these conditions retard social interaction, a contact lens solution may be considered.

Halloween and parties are also a common use for colored lenses that cover the sclera. Many types of these cover the entire eye's surface with the same color. Black is the most popular, creating an eerie illusion. Also, dark blue, brown, and tiger's eye are other examples of party type sclera contacts.
