No Touch Laser Eye Surgery

A significant portion of Americans have some sort of deviation in their normal vision process, meaning that they are not all 20/20 vision seers. Over the years each of these people might go through ten different prescriptions for eyeglasses and/or contacts. Up until recent years, there was no way around this hard fact of life for most. The world of corrective vision has been revolutionized with advances into the field of no touch laser eye surgery.

One method of touch-free corrective eye surgery is known as Photo-Refractive Keratectomy. It treats refractive errors by removing the tissue from the surface of the cornea. First, your eye is numbed using a topical or eye drop anesthesia. Then, a surgeon removes a thin layer of protective skin that covers the cornea, scientifically known as the epithelium. This is done with either a brush or the laser. During the actual procedure, the patient stares at a fixation light, fixed in one place. In less than a minute, the laser removes the proper amount of tissue while it reshapes the surface of the cornea.

A bandage contact lens is placed on the eye for up to three days after. Because the ephithelium was removed, patients may experience blurry vision for close to five days. Eye drops and the contact lens are effective in reducing postoperative discomfort and/or pain. Final visual results may be fully realized anywhere from several days to a few months as the surface heals in accordance to each individual's healing tendencies. This procedure is used to treat low to moderate amounts of nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness. This procedure is acceptable for not only those whore prescription glasses, but also for wearers of all models of contact lenses.
