Theatrical contact lenses bring out a character's eyes.
When a theater production is put on, all actors and actresses get into character by studying lines, putting on clothes, and essentially pretending to be someone else. While an actor or actress tries to be another person during a play or musical, they also try to act like that person by donning attire. Theatrical contact lenses are part of that transition from individual to somebody else.
These types of lens not only help a character get better suited for his or her environment, but they also add to the overall transformation in costume. Many movies stars even use special fx lenses to achieve a specific look. This is especially true if the character they are striving to portray was described as having a specific look in a book or script.
Crazy contacts allow for characters to take on a specific style of their own. Some contacts, even scary ones, add to the effects monsters and other creatures will have on an audience, say, in a horror film. Non-prescription contacts allow stars who don't wear glasses to find an easy and inexpensive way to get in touch with their inner character for a part. Surely, if someone needed prescribed contacts, these, too, could be arranged by those producing a play or movie. It just means a little extra money is needed.
Specialty lenses will always add character, to well, characters. This not only brings the actor or actress closer to nailing a particular part, but it also brings the audience one step closer to believing that the character is real. Besides, who wants to see a movie when an actor or actress can't even pull off the character they are trying to portray?
